The 2019 three day Race Retro extravaganza was held at the spacious grounds of the NAEC’s Stoneleigh Park site in Warwickshire from February 22nd to 24th. It’s dual aspect of historic motorsport exhibition and live rally stage (two in simultaneous operation this year) brought crowds from across the UK.
In the various exhibition halls racing clubs enthusiastically engaged with visitors about the benefits of joining them and the fun to be had in their series and competitions, and proudly displayed vehicles from the members. 2019 saw a return of the Motor Sport Hall of Fame with an an array of racers; from F1 Le Mans, through saloons to an ex Ayrton Senna Van Diemen Formula Ford, plus a tribute display to Mike Hawthorne.
There was also the opportunity to listen to driving ‘aces’ such as John Fitzpatrick (a multiple champion in saloons and GT’s) and Rauno Aaltonen (rally champion par excellence) and enjoy a lively Q&A session.
Elsewhere there were trade stands for those seeking motorsport parts to enhance their results in 2019 and what I will generously describe as ‘auto-jumble’ for those seeking heritage items.
The location of the live Rally Stage and BHKC demo runs were shifted slightly from that used before due to HS2 prep-works taking over the previous space. However for 2019 there were two stages set, one primarily those having a passenger seat experience and the other a twisting and demanding layout that required skill and accuracy.
And for those of you that wonder about such things, Hyun Dai is not a Welsh rally driver.
